I have had this rusty bar car for quite awhile. It was given to me at an Estate sale when then lady couldn't believe I would actually want to take it home. I always go for the stuff no one wants. It works out well for me. Anyways I loved its rusty charm for a long time, but I was looking at it recently and decided it was time to give it some new life.
Before: As the guys from American Pickers would say this thing is "Rusty Gold."
I bought my spray paint at Michaels using my 40% off coupan. I originally had planned on buying my spray paint at Lowes or Home depot but neither store had a pretty gold. Krylon Caramel Latte is nice soft gold. Not to blingy, but at the same time looks a little sparkly. I love this color.
At first I thought I could just spray paint over the rust.
It was at this point in the project that I realized I needed to get the sand paper out and sand off some of the globs of rust. I knew it would never be rust free because this thing is practically being held together by rust, but an improvement was in order.
After a long time of sanding and more spray paint (2 more trips to Michaels to be exact) here is the final product.
I think it came out great, and you can hardly see the rust glops.
My record player is happy to not be sitting on a rust any more too.
I just threw these decorations on the cart, but I want to do something different on the shelves. What I don't know, but I am sure something will come to me.
What projects have you been working on? Please share!

Rachel,
ReplyDeleteyour cart turned out fabulous! I have 2 that I love, a jadite green one and a cream one that my daughter is using. I also have a third that is out in the garage with one brown shelf and 2 cream shelves, waiting for a makeover so it can go to my space and from there to a good home. You've inspired me to get painting!
Thanks for stopping by!
Rebecca
Great job! I would love to have one of these. My mom had an avocado green one!
ReplyDeleteI've been doing a lot of deep cleaning while my son has been gone on a trip. We home school so our house gets dirty fast and I hate cleaning around him while he's trying to study!! ♥
It looks fabulous! I love those kind of carts and I would have taken it home too!
ReplyDeleteI have several of these carts for garden supplies and plants. I do keep mine rusty, but after seeing yours, mine may get a little makeover.
ReplyDeleteI love the gold makeover, very nice! Maybe a nice vintage doily or runner to hid the rust globs on the top shelve, either way it is really a great piece. I love your record player by the way : )
ReplyDeleteI have a cart just like that! Mine is cream, though. I love your turquoise record player, that's awesome. I'm almost caught up w/ furniture projects, just down to a piano bench I'm turning into a coffee table for my future screened porch. Thanks for visiting my blog, and I know what you mean about being careful what you bring home, don't want to end up on Hoarders! Ha ha!
ReplyDeleteLove this bar cart! Can't believe how bad it was before and now how beautiful it looks. Where did you get that awesome record player?
