Guest Post - Erica from Caught on a Whim

Hello Fellow Thrifters and Friends,
I am so happy to have my first guest post today! Erica from Caught on a Whim is such a sweet girl and has one of the loveliest blogs.  She has fantastic craft tutorials, how to's, and a lot of fun stuff in between. We have been e-mailing back and forth for some time and becoming fast friends, and I nervously asked if she would guest post here on my blog. Being the sweet person she is she quickly accepted. When choosing the topic to discuss she wanted to talk about her new found joy of thrifting. I was more then excited about this topic.

Welcome Erica to Joyful Treasure Hunting!
How long have you been thrifting?

I've thrifted on and off for years, but never really considered myself a serious thrifter. I've been known to pop into shops here and there and see if I had any luck that day. Lately, I've been making a conscious effort to be more thrifty, and even made a goal to get out and thrift at least once a month. It's been a fun challenge. Thrifting takes a different state of mind. You have to go out and know you might not come back with anything. It's not the same as shopping at a store where they have an item in every color and size. But, when you take the time and find a great thrifted item, it is so worth it, because a thrifted item is unique and special in a way that a store bought item can never be.
What is your favorite thrifted find?

That's a hard one, because everything you find when you are thrifting is so unique! I recently found a fun elephant brooch pin that I'm loving right now, but my all time favorite item would have to be this beautiful silk scarf that I LOVE. It makes me wonder how on earth someone could give it up!

Why buy second hand vs. going to the store and purchasing it brand new?

Gosh, there are plenty of reasons! Here's a few... Thrifting is a fun challenge, because it is pretty much like going on a treasure hunt. You really have to dig around to find those amazing items, and nothing beats that rush you get when you find a thrifted gem. Shopping at a store doesn't give you that same thrill. I also appreciate that thrifting is a great way to reduce your environmental impact, because you are discovering and re-using 'new-to-you items' rather than buying new stuff all the time. Plus it is a great money saver. I can go into a thrift store and spend a couple bucks and come out with a bag full of stuff. That's not bad at all, and my pocket book agrees!
What do you go to first in the thrift store? Houses wares? Clothing? Books? Furniture?

Always the scarf bin. I'm the girl diving head first into those bins hoping to come up for air with a great find in hand. I'm not shy about bin surfing. Not one little bit! ;)

Thank you so much for being my first guest blogger Erica! You are always welcome on Joyful Treasure Hunting! Be sure to pop on over to Erica's lovely blog Caught on a Whim.
P.s I would love to interview more newbie thrifters or of course well seasoned ones as well. Please e-mail me if you would like to be featured :)
